Washington Wins 2009 National Title!
Lawrie's Huskies Triumph Over Nelson's Gators
6.2.09
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Despite a valiant effort by the Southeastern Conference, the Pac-10 claimed yet another Women’s College World Series title tonight as the Washington Huskies swept the Florida Gators in the best-of-three finals. Although the Pac-10 has been historically dominant in NCAA Division I softball, it was the Huskies' first ever WCWS title.

Not even Ali Gardner could save the Gators—the hero of Sunday’s game struck out swinging with the tying run on second base for the final out of the Huskies’ 3-2 final victory. Pitcher Danielle Lawrie, the 2009 Collegiate Player of the Year, was stunning—she struck out eight batters en route to claiming the Series MVP award.

Florida vs Washington for NCAA Crown
Nelson to Face Lawrie in Blockbuster Series Finale
5.31.09
It’s the dream title match-up everybody was hoping for: #1 seeded Florida led by Stacey Nelson, versus Washington led by Danielle Lawrie, Olympic pitcher for Canada in the 2008 Games and 2009 NCAA Collegiate Player of the Year. But getting to that point was filled with unbelievable drama—the kind that is steadily making the Women’s College World Series one of America’s best sporting events, male or female.

First there was upstart Georgia taking favored Washington to the mat in a four-hour, extra-inning slugfest that ended 9-8 in the Bulldogs’ favor. The deciding factor was an uncharacteristic mistake by Lawrie who gave up the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.

So how do you make up for that kind of horrifying misstep? By smashing a grand slam in the rematch to give your team an early 4-0 lead. Although the Bulldogs fought back valiantly, it was a deficit they could not fully recover from, losing 9-3 and advancing the Huskies to the championship round.

But there’s more! In the previous game, Alabama had favored Florida on the ropes, leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, the Gators’ Ali Gardiner stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded, having gone hitless in nine previous attempts in this years WCWS. Then Gardner did the improbable, launching a walk-off grand slam homer to crush the Crimson Tide’s dream and put Florida in the final against Washington.

As The Softball Channel predicted back in January (see A Changing of the Guard; Pac-10 Teams Might Finally Miss College Softball’s Big Dance), this year’s WCWS saw a shifting of power away from the West Coast, with three of the final four teams from the Southeastern Conference. But the Washington Huskies still have a chance to bring home the trophy for the Pac-10. The first game of the best-of-three game final series starts Monday June 1st at 8:00 PM EDT on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com.

Gators & Huskies Lead WCWS Pack
Stacey Nelson & Danielle Lawrie Dominate in the Circle
5.29.09
The way Stacey Nelson is pitching, the top-seeded Florida Gators are definitely the team to beat in this year’s Women’s College World Series. In a dominating performance underscored by a wicked 70-mph screwball and a deadly drop, Nelson threw a one-hit shutout against #5-seed Michigan tonight to keep Florida in the winners’ bracket.

Also in the winners’ bracket: the Washington Huskies led by 2009 Collegiate Player of the Year, Danielle Lawrie. The #3-seeded Huskies fended off last year’s champ Arizona State in an extra-inning cliffhanger.

Right now Nelson and Lawrie appear to be on a collision course in what could be a pitching match-up for the ages. Action in the 2009 Women’s College World Series continues tomorrow on ESPN and ESPN2 in a quadruple-header—softball doesn’t get much better than this!

Elite 8 Teams Advance to 2009 WCWS
Pitcher Stacey Nelson & Florida Gators Lead the Pack
5.27.09
Only eight teams remain in contention for the 2009 NCAA Division 1 softball championship: Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri and Washington. The Florida Gators led by Stacey Nelson have to be considered the frontrunners, as they have topped the polls for most of the season. But the Pac-10 is well represented and always a threat. All eight teams will vie for the national championship in the Women’s College World Series beginning on Thursday, May 28th in Oklahoma City. Read more.

NPF Rebounds With 'Pride'
Pro League Adds New Central Florida Team
5.13.09
Denver, Colorado
The situation looked dire for the National Pro Fastpitch league last month with the loss of its second franchise in 2009, leaving only four. But like the stock market, the league’s fortunes have rebounded substantially with the announcement this morning of a cooperative partnership with the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA).

The USSSA will field a new team to replace the defunct Washington Glory—aptly named the Pride—based in Osceola County, Florida. The move gains a valuable foothold for the NPF in the Central Florida area near Disney World, where thousands of young athletes participate annually in USSSA Tournaments and events.

The Pride roster includes 10 former Glory players including 2007 NPF Pitcher of the Year, Desiree Serrano, and 2007 NPF Player of the Year, Amber Jackson. The roster also includes Olympians Monica Abbott, Kelly Kretschman (a Florida native), and Caitlin Lowe. The new ball club also inherits the 2009 Glory draft choices of pitcher Stacey Nelson—odds on favorite for 2009 Collegiate Player of the Year—and outfielder Kim Waleszonia of the University of Florida, in addition to shortstop Maddy Coon from Stanford.

The Pride will be coached by J.Y. Davis, an accomplished Women’s Majors Coach and former Men’s Division player, and Margaret Davis, a former Women’s Majors player with 22 years of top level experience. The team will open their season on June 10th in Elgin, Illinois versus the Chicago Bandits.

NCAA Division 2 Playoffs Begin
Le Moyne & Hawaii Pacific Each Win Cliffhangers
5.8.09
The opening round of the NCAA Division 2 post-season tournament saw some close games. Ranked #12 in the nation in the latest coaches’ poll, the Le Moyne Dolphins (41-10) dodged a bullet with a narrow 3-2 victory over the unranked Dominican Chargers in the East Regional. Kelly Schweikert was 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and a home run to lead the Dolphin’s offense.

On the West Coast, the #14-ranked Hawaii Pacific Sea Warriors (35-8) edged the unranked California-San Diego Tritons 2-1. Krystal Plunkett and Ciera Senas each drove in a run to pace the Sea Warriors.

NCAA Division 3 Playoffs Begin
Defending Champ Eau Claire Shocks Whitewater, 5-1
5.7.09
Bloomington, Illinois
If you think top-notch competition is limited to NCAA Division I softball, think again.  Defending National Division 3 champ University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has an amazing rivalry going with cross-state foe UW-Whitewater.

Last year, Eau Claire defeated Whitewater for the 2008 NCAA Division III Softball Championship. After being down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, the Eau Claire Blugolds defeated the Whitewater Warhawks 4-3 in nine innings with a walk-off home run.

Today in NCAA regional action in Bloomington, Illinois top-seeded Whitewater (36-6) was shocked by Eau Claire (29-15) by them score of 5-1, dropping them into the losers’ bracket.  Eau Claire racked up their 5 runs on only 6 hits, in large part due to a 3-run homer by catcher Bekki Kidnie.  Whitewater is currently ranked 13th nationally whereas Eau Claire had fallen out of the top 25.

Japan's Growing Softball Dominance
Is America Losing Its Grip on the Sport of Fastpitch?
4.24.09
Last August, Japan shocked the world softball community by defeating the seemingly invincible American team for the Olympic gold medal in Beijing. That medal had belonged to the USA since 1996—when women’s fastpitch softball was first added to the roster of the Olympic Games—and the Americans were poised to win their 4th in a row before Japan swooped in and wrested it from their grasp. Reportedly, the Japanese had studied American superstar Cat Osterman’s pitching style in minute detail for years to break the “Osterman Code” and gain an advantage.

But Japan’s offensive didn’t stop there. The country’s pro league is flourishing, and more and more of the USA’s finest players are heading overseas to play in it—including superstar pitchers Monica Abbott and Angela Tincher. Tokyo also currently tops the list of candidate cities to host the 2016 Games, which could see the reemergence of fastpitch on the Olympic program. Read more in our latest

Japan Fights USA for Olympic Site
2016 Games Could End Up in Tokyo, Not Chicago
4.19.09
Tokyo, Japan
When Japan beat the USA for the softball gold medal in Beijing, it shocked a lot of Americans who had underestimated the fervor for softball in the Land of the Rising Sun. But now the two countries have moved it up a notch—in a battle for the site of the Games themselves seven years from now.

Chicago put its best foot forward a couple weeks ago in front of the International Olympic Committee’s Evaluation Commission, and Tokyo wrapped up its presentation today. Both cities received high praise from the inspectors, who so far haven’t tipped their hats about a favorite—but in their summary statements about Japan, they openly lauded its strong economic position and financial guarantees to secure the budget. Rio de Janeiro and Madrid are also being considered. Read more.

The site of the 2016 Olympiad is of great importance for softball fans, as it might herald the reintroduction of their sport into the Olympic program. If that happens, the organizers, coaches, players and fans of Team USA Softball would definitely like to have home field advantage—especially if they find themselves in a rematch with Japan for the gold medal. The final vote for the 2016 venue is less than six months away.

Windmill Motion: High Stress?

Latest Study Claims Pitchers Put Strain on Biceps
You’ve heard it a million times: the underhand motion of fastpitch softball pitchers is far
easier on the arm than the overhand delivery of baseball pitchers. That’s why teams with
a single dominant pitcher can be unstoppable in the post-season, as their ace goes on,
and on, and on—Taryne Mowatt proved that in the 2007 Women’s College World Series.
But new evidence presented by The American Journal of Sports Medicine suggests
the windmill motion might not be as injury-resistant as once believed. Read more in our

National Pro Fastpitch is in Jeopardy
Washington Glory Folds, Only 4 Franchises Remain
4.12.09
Fairfax, Virginia
Although no official announcement has been made by either the ball club or the National Pro Fastpitch league, sources close to the Washington Glory confirm the franchise has folded after two years of operation.

At the conclusion of the 2008 season, a group of investors attempted to purchase the insolvent team from the previous owner, Paul Wilson. The deal was announced here on The Softball Channel on February 17th, as part of our live webcast of the 2009 NPF Draft.

The new investors did everything possible to salvage the team, but as the deal was almost finalized, more and more undisclosed debt from the previous owner continued to come forward. The entire team, coaches, and support staff were informed the team was folding on Friday morning, April 10th.

The Glory experienced unprecedented success on the field, winning the 2007 NPF Championship Series in their inaugural year and finishing second in 2008. Olympic superstar pitcher Monica Abbott was named the playoff MVP for her efforts in 2007.

The Glory’s demise marks the second time an NPF franchise has closed up shop this year; the New England Riptide called it quits on February 6th. It remains to be seen what schedule the league will adopt, if any, for its four remaining teams.

'Imagine' Olympic Softball in Chicago!
The Windy City Puts on Ad Blitz for 2016 Games
4.10.09
Chicago, Illinois
Ladies and gentlemen, the International Olympic Committee’s inspection team has left Chicago. And it gave the city a glowing review—with the exception of the weather, that is; Mother Nature decided to dump several inches of snow on the visitors last Sunday. The IOC hailed the Windy City as an extremely strong candidate for landing the 2016 Games, but cautioned there are three other excellent bids to consider in Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, and there can be only one overall winner.

Mayor Richard Daley and his staff pulled out all the stops for the IOC visit, including an appearance from Oprah and an “Imagine” media blitz featuring Olympic athletes beside the Chicago 2016 logo. While our heroine Jennie Finch did not actually appear on any of the billboards (as pictured in the artist’s rendering above) it COULD happen, and as early as October—IF Chicago is chosen as host city AND softball is reinstated as an Olympic sport for the 2016 Games.

The final votes on these monumental decisions will take place at the XIII Olympic Congress & 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark on or about October 2nd. Chicagoans—and softball fans—are hoping US President Barack Obama decides to attend this important event, as that could make all the difference.

Kaitlin Cochran & Missy Penna Shine
2009 NPF Draft Picks Prove Their Worth in the Pac-10
4.4.09
Good things are happening for Arizona State outfielder Kaitlin Cochran. On February 17th she had the singular distinction of being the #1 selection in the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch Draft. And last weekend she proved why, leading #4 ASU to its first-ever consecutive run-rule sweep in a Pac-10 weekend. Kaitlin went an amazing 5-for-5 at the plate, smashing three home runs and one double to earn Pac-10 Player of the Week honors.

The NPF has a history of picking great talent in their College Senior Draft, and this year was no exception. In addition to Kaitlin, the Akron Racers nabbed seven other gems—including Missy Penna, this week’s Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. Missy helped #2 Stanford earn three wins over ranked teams last week, striking out a total of 45 batters in the process. The senior threw a school single-game record 19 strikeouts in the game against #25 Cal Poly, breaking her own record of 17 set last year.

Chicago's Olympic Dream Is In Trouble
Ranked 4th on Current Bid List for 2016 Games
3.26.09
Chicago, Illinois
Chicago’s dream of becoming the host city for the 2016 Games, and possibly ushering the sport of softball back into Olympic competition, may be in jeopardy. The Windy City ranks last on the current BidIndex—a measure of each candidate’s chance to host the Games—behind Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid, in that order.

The BidIndex encompasses an intense evaluation of each candidate’s bid book—detailed 600-page “blue prints” describing how each city would organize the Games—in addition to multiple other factors. The latest update released four days ago was the first since the original submission of the bid books to the International Olympic Committee.

Yesterday Chicago Mayor Richard Daley met with delegates of the IOC in Denver, Colorado, prior to a 20-minute formal presentation to the group today. The presentation included a video tracing Chicago's Olympic bid back to the foundation of the city. Next week the IOC evaluators arrive in Chicago to see the city for themselves.

Barack Obama: Will He or Won't He?
President Could Hold Key to Softball's Olympic Return
3.24.09
Chicago, Illinois
Experts agree: President Barack Obama’s presence at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Copenhagen this October could mean the difference in the Games coming to his hometown Chicago in 2016. The Windy City also happens to be the base of operations for Jennie Finch and the World Champion Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch league. So what better site for softball’s return to Olympic competition? Certainly the President, a known advocate of Title IX and the father of two young daughters, would be pleased about that. But as of now, it’s not certain he will make the trip. Read more.

Half of Team USA Headed to the NPF
Washington Glory Grabs Most Olympians at Three
3.22.09
Fairfax, Virginia
Washington Glory head coach and general manager Carie Dever-Boaz was somewhat apprehensive last month. Despite a great 2009 College Senior Draft, she was still locked in negotiations with two of her most famous ball players for the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch season: Olympians Monica Abbott and Kelly Kretschman. That anxiety vanished on March 6th, when both marquee players signed on the dotted line.

Then an unexpected, colossal bonus last week: the Glory came to terms with a third Olympian, Caitlin Lowe. The left-handed hitting outfielder made the record books last August in Beijing by hitting the first-ever inside the park home run in Olympic history. Lowe started all nine games in the Olympics for the US, batting .357 on 10 hits, both of which were second for Team USA.

Lowe’s signing means nearly half of the 2008 US Olympic Team (7 of 15 players, 47%) is headed to the NPF—in addition to Abbott, Kretschman and Lowe, there’s Crystl Bustos (Akron Racers), Jennie Finch (Chicago Bandits), Vicky Galindo (Chicago Bandits) and Cat Osterman (Rockford Thunder). Akron has also signed Olympic replacement player Jenny Topping.

That means, with the lone exception of the Philadelphia Force, every one of the NPF franchises has added at least one member of the silver medal-winning squad to its roster. And that's great news for fans of world-class fastpitch softball.

Chicago Bandit Fan Shares His Passion for Fastpitch

What’s it like to take to the field wearing a Chicago Bandits uniform? It’s hard to imagine now in the Windy City, since the snow has barely melted and March looks more like a lion than a lamb.    Weighted Balls—A Heavy Question
Will They Add Zip to Your Fastball, or Ruin It?
Speed is something most pitchers can’t get enough of. So strengthening your shoulder,
arm and wrist muscles by throwing weighted balls seems to make sense. And they’re
easy to make for next to nothing. But Olympic superstar Cat Osterman doesn’t advocate
using them, because they can upset a pitcher’s rhythm. Read more.

NPF Ownership Goes Topsy-Turvy
Turbulent Economy & Tax Laws Are Partly to Blame
3.6.09
These are rocky economic times, and the world of softball has not escaped the storm. Within the National Pro Fastpitch league, the New England Riptide closed up shop last month, and two of the remaining five league franchises changed owners in the off-season: the Chicago Bandits last September, and the Washington Glory last month. Does this mean the NPF is in financial peril? Other factors may be responsible; including the one thing we all hate, especially this time of year—taxes. Read more in our latest Softball Notebook article Bye & Sell: Team Ownership Turmoil in the NPF.

Blockbuster Summer for Team USA!
Two Possible Rematches with Archrival Japan
2.26.09
Team USA’s summer 2009 schedule has been released, and it’s raised quite a few eyebrows. First and foremost, two events offer possible rematches with Japan—the team that snatched the gold medal away from the Americans in Beijing: World Cup 4 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 13-20, and the Japan Cup in Yokohama, Japan on July 28-August 3. But which former Olympians will choose to compete, and how will that affect their participation in the National Pro Fastpitch league? Read more.

Akron Racers Dominate 2009 NPF Draft
Capture Almost 1/3 of Selections, Including Top Two
2.17.09
Akron, Ohio
Following the adage “There’s no time like the present,” the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch league virtually took over this year’s NPF Draft, trading away future choices to capture 8 of 25 available players in 2009—including the first two overall selections and three straight picks in the fourth round.

President and General Manager of the ball club Joey Arrietta is doing everything she can to make 2009 “The Year of the Racers”—besides this year’s draft, the organization will be hosting the 2009 NPF Championship Series at its own Firestone Stadium in August. And with the throng of elite players the team picked up today, it might just be raising the 2009 Championship Trophy on its own podium.

Pac-10 Owns D1 College Softball
But 22-Year Streak Is Threatened in 2009
2.8.09
Since the modern NCAA Division 1 college softball playoff format was created back in 1986, there has been at least one Pac-10 team in the title game each season—an amazing 22-year streak. But 2009 could be different. None of the top Pac-10 teams—Arizona, Arizona State, Cal and UCLA—has a bona fide ace pitcher to lead them. Instead, they will have to rely on a young, inexperienced, and more mistake-prone crop of hurlers, leaving the door open for other teams around the nation to step into the void.  Read more in our latest Softball Notebook article A Changing of the Guard? Pac-10 Teams Might Finally Miss College Softball's Big Dance.

Riptide Bows Out, Eileen Canney Heads to Chicago
2.6.09
Denver, Colorado
National Pro Fastpitch League Commissioner/President Cheri Kempf announced today that the New England Riptide—one of the NPF’s six founding franchises—has withdrawn from the league and will not compete in the 2009 season, citing economic difficulties. A new schedule has been released, and the remaining five league teams are quickly dividing up the Riptide’s stars—most notably the Chicago Bandits, who have nabbed former Northwestern star and TSC 2008 Pitcher of the Year Eileen Canney. Read more.

  JANUARY CONTEST WINNERS

  Annie Shupe, Washingtonville, New York
I love softball because: The smell of my leather glove stays in my nose as i squat
behind the plate watching the opposing player step up and dare to hit against my
pitcher and test my knowledge of the game. The clay below my feet gives way as i
get set in case the runner at first tests my arm and steals second. I look up at the
batter to see if her hands are high on the bat getting ready for a sacrifice bunt, or if
they are low getting ready to hit. Then i look at the way she stands. I ask myself,
does she have an open stance or a closed stance? I look at my pitcher, i tell her to
pitch low and away. The pitch comes and i frame it. "STRIKE!" calls the ump. I think
to myself "She looks aggravated." So i wait until she is set and i give her high and
inside. She shifts back like she’s going to get hit. I smile. STRIKE!. "Now" i say to
myself. "Now she is in my game." I tell my pitcher to give her a change-up right
down the pipe. She sees that meatball coming and swings for the fences! I stand up
and look at her. "STRIKE!" calls out the ump. I did my job.

Why do i love softball? I love softball because it has molded me into the confident
young adult i am today. Softball has taken me places many people wouldn't have
the chance to go. It has given me my closest friends. My family has grown closer
together traveling from place to place. Softball has taught me how to work hard and
how to push myself to become a better player, and a better human being. It has
also taught me how to be confident and keep my cool in tough situations. Softball
has given me a dream to work for, and has given me heroes to show me how to
  obtain that dream.

Above all softball has given me a life, a beautiful life, and everyday i thank god that
he gives me the chance to play another day.

I love softball because it is who i am. It is who i will always be. My love of the game
will take me to the top, i can feel it in my heart.

I am Annie, a 17-year-old fastpitch catcher. And i love softball.

  Alexis DeLand, Saline, Michigan

I was watching TV with my dad the other night and he asked me what I like most
about softball. I sat there for a moment thinking and the only answer I could give him
was EVERYTHING. Hitting and fielding, I like it all. Softball is fun for me whether it's
8 am Saturday practice or a weekend full of games in the summer. I can't wait for the
season to start so my teammates and I can win some games!

Are 'Hot Bats' Too Hot to Handle?

Some Claim Bat Rolling Is Just Plain Cheating
   1.31.09
High tech composite bats are composed of carbon fibers and—like your own muscle
fibers—stretching makes them more flexible. That greatly improves the bat's “trampoline
effect” when the ball makes contact, resulting in increased batted ball speed and
distance—up to 40 feet, to be exact. The preferred method of stretching is to place the
bat between two rollers and apply pressure—a process called, logically enough, rolling.
But is it illegal? Although the Amateur Softball Association of America itself rolls each
bat prior to testing its performance, the practice is highly controversial. Read more.

The media spotlight will be firmly focused on the Super Bowl this weekend, as sports fans from around the globe pay tribute to their American football heroes. However, the world's most successful pro athlete is actually a softball pitcher. Michele Smith—a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Team USA—has led Japan’s Toyota Shokki professional fastpitch team to an incredible 8 championships in 13 years.

New Mascaras Promise A Longer-Lasting Look
1.26.09
You might yearn for that “penetrating pitcher stare,” but mascara running down your cheek isn’t exactly intimidating—or attractive. That’s why cosmetic companies are constantly trying to come up with more permanent pigments, especially for athletes. Two new products on the market now promise a longer-lasting look for your eyes: Smashbox Bionic Mascara and Lorac Publicity Stunt Lashes.

Uncasville, Connecticut
The weather outside may have been frightful, but inside the massive Mohegan Sun Resort in Connecticut, two of softball’s greatest superstars—Jennie Finch and Cat Osterman—were purely delightful. Jennie and Cat shared inspirational stories and pitching secrets onstage in front of 1,000 captivated coaches, players and fans on January 10th. Jennie concentrated on her rise ball, which has been known to confound even major league baseball players. And Cat demonstrated drills she uses to make her own movement pitches so magical. Also in the spotlight was softball coaching legend Sue Enquist—winner of 11 National Championships at UCLA—who shared tips about pre-practice drills and batting technique. Read more & view photos of Jennie & Cat.

Now that the New Year is well underway, it’s time to start thinking about the National Pro Fastpitch draft.  Last year’s crop of college seniors will be hard to beat—the first round alone included two Women’s College World Series MVP’s in Taryne Mowatt (2007) and Katie Burkhart (2008), and the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, Angela Tincher. Sweeping Changes Announced for 2009 Pro Playoffs
12.7.08
The National Pro Fastpitch league announced a new playoff system last Tuesday that more closely resembles that of Major League Baseball. The revamped format consists of three, three-game series played over a four-day period. The 2009 event will extend from Thursday, August 20th to Sunday, August 23rd. The venue is also moving from the neutral site of Kimberly, Wisconsin to the home of the league’s most centrally-located franchise, the Akron Racers. If 2008 Collegiate Player of the Year Angela Tincher and the rest of her Akron squad needed any more incentive to make the 2009 playoffs, this is it! Read more.

NPF Players Uphold Sparkling Image
Female Pros Proudly Accept 'Role Model' Label
12.4.08
According to former NBA great Charles Barkley, male sports stars should not be viewed as role models. Based on news from the NFL this week, that might be a good idea: New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burris was hauled out of a police precinct in handcuffs Monday, and six other players were suspended Tuesday for illicit use of a banned substance. In contrast, female athletes from the National Pro Fastpitch league proudly promote their “squeaky clean” image, encouraging girls and young women to actively follow in their footsteps. COLLEGE RECRUITING DOUBLEHEADER!
Choosing the Right College
How to Make the Right Decision...And When
11.26.08
November marks the early signing period for NCAA college sports programs, the seven-day window for high school student athletes to sign a binding National Letter of Intent to accept college athletic scholarships for the following fall. Sports covered in the early signing period include boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. The benefits are simple: recruits have their college plans set early in their senior year, and college programs obtain written, rather than just verbal, commitments from them.

But is early signing TOO early? Two-time NPF All-Star Catcher Selena Collins—now an assistant softball coach at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas—is amazed at how soon prep players are being coaxed into committing to college programs, sometimes before they’re ready. Read more in her latest Softball Notebook article Early Decision: Are High School Players Committing to Colleges Too Soon?

And learn how to put your best foot forward—and ask the right kind of questions—during the D3 recruiting process in the companion article Pick Me! College Recruiting in Division III.

'Cat Woman' Commits to the Midwest
Olympic Hurler Sets Down Roots Near Chicago
11.25.08
She’s crisscrossed the globe pitching for her country the last few years, but there are signs Olympian Cat Osterman is finally settling down—and of all places, in the Midwest. Last year she accepted a position as assistant softball coach at DePaul University in Chicago, allowing her to be near her National Pro Fastpitch team, the Rockford Thunder. And as a sign she’s seriously committed to the local Rockford community, she’s giving a pitching clinic next month at an area high school. This summer she also plans to concentrate on the Rockford team and its fans in their new Thunder Park stadium in nearby Roscoe, limiting her participation with the US National Team. Read more.

The NPF Experiences a Building Boom
11.23.08
There may be financial gloom and doom from “Wall Street to Main Street” these days, but you wouldn’t know it around the National Pro Fastpitch league. The NPF just raised its salary cap, and they’re in the midst of a building boom—the Chicago Bandits added $500,000 worth of improvements earlier this year to their Judson University field in Elgin, Illinois; the Rockford Thunder are installing $260,000 worth of upgrades to their Thunder Park stadium in Roscoe, Illinois; and the Washington Glory are in the final stages of a $2 million dollar renovation of their George Mason University complex in Fairfax, Virginia. And don’t forget about the Bandits’ proposed new $5 million dollar Elgin sports facility targeted for completion in 2011.

Superstar To Lead Midwest's Biggest Holiday Parade
11.21.08
Before you head “over the river and through the woods” for turkey and stuffing, be sure to catch Jennie Finch and the Chicago Bandits in the 75th annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade. Jennie is Grand Marshal of this year’s event, the Midwest’s largest holiday procession. Over 400,000 street-side spectators and 72 million cable homes are expected to watch the Olympic ace and her supporting cast of Chicago Bandits motor down State Street in Chicago. The parade gives New York a run for its money—last year it had more giant inflatables than the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. WGN-TV9 and WGN-DT 9.1 will air the turkey day spectacular and in high definition from 8 to 11 am CT. WGN America will also broadcast the parade nationally, establishing it as one of only three parades in the country to be covered live, in its entirety, on a national television broadcast.

Nominations Are Now Open for New Award

Vote on Softball's Fate is Less Than One Year Away
11.10.08
The decision by the International Olympic Committee to remove softball from the 2012 Games was a huge blow to the international softball community. In response, the International Softball Federation drafted a ten-point plan of attack last spring known as the BackSoftball Campaign. This ambitious undertaking aims to increase the number of worldwide softball participants—especially young women—from its current impressive level of 8.4 million to 10.5 million, and the number of participating countries from 128 to 160.

Now there’s less than one year to go. The IOC meets in Copenhagen on October 1st, 2009 to vote on which sports will be included in the XXXI Olympiad in 2016. Read more.

So what can you do? There's still time to sign Jamie Gray’s petition to save Olympic softball (watch the video).

  OCTOBER CONTEST WINNER

  Titan09, Bloomington, Illinois
I love softball because: It is a team sport. If you have never played in a team sport
you do not know what you are missing. If you have never played in a team sport you
cannot understand the bond that teammates feel for each other. If you have never
played in a team sport, that is a shame. I have met a lot of really great friends through
softball, but that is not the bond that I am talking about. There is a certain relationship
that teammates have between each other during the season, and if you are lucky,
during the off-season as well. Maybe you are on a team with people that you would
not normally be friends, had it not been for being on the same team. There is a
pretty good chance that there are a few people on the team that you actually do not
get along with all that well. But I think it is great that no matter who is on your team,
when it is crunch time during the game, or someone makes a great play to keep your
team ahead, everyone loves each other and you and your teammates could not be
closer. It is a great feeling to be able to show up at practice everyday and enjoy the
company of your teammates. It makes it so much easier to work hard everyday
because I am not only working hard for myself, I am working hard for my teammates
and the bond that we all have. There is something very satisfying about individual
sports like golf and running, but NOTHING compares to a team sport like softball. It
is indescribable. I hope everyone out there knows the feeling I am talking about...it is
great. And that is why I love softball.

New Stadium for Cat's Thunder
Construction Has Begun at 'Thunder Park' in Roscoe
11.2.08
Cat Osterman & her pro softball team the Rockford Thunder are relocating to nearby Roscoe, due to catastrophic flooding of their former home in Rockford last spring. Construction has already begun at Players Park, now known as “Thunder Park”—the first such facility named after an NPF franchise.

The project is a joint effort between the Thunder, the Village of Roscoe, and Stateline Youth Athletics—a not-for-profit organization providing recreational baseball and softball leagues for boys and girls ages 4-16. SYA vice president Denny McKenny, who is spearheading the effort, says the Thunder’s new facility will “rival the best anywhere.”

New amenities will include in-ground dugouts, a press box, seating for over 1200 spectators, T-Ball practice diamonds, playground equipment, and even an above-ground pool just beyond the centerfield fence for pool parties.

Work is scheduled to be completed this fall, so practice and clinics can start as soon as weather permits in the spring. Read more about it in our latest
